Next week, the SCANPUB research group will be conducting its second theory seminar in Les Arcs, France. The seminar, lasting from the 24th to the 26th of September, will focus on issues such as nationalism, citizenship, immigration, human rights and democracy. Read more about the program here.

SCANPUB just conducted its second annual Summer Symposium in the city centre of Bergen. The Symposium opened thursday 30 August focusing on quantitative comparative studies. Over the last months, SCANPUB’s three master’s student members have completed and delivered their master’s theses. The candidates are Anne Bredahl, Luise Salte and Anders Løkeland Slåke. Thursday June 22nd, SCANPUB and the rhetorics group was happy to receive Lisa Villadsen from the University of Copenhagen to the institute for information- and media science at the University of Bergen. In January, Ida Andersen presented preliminary findings from her research project on online debates abouth the ‘refugee crisis’ as arenas for discussions about who ‘we’ are. The lecture was given at SCANPUB’s winter symposium in Helsinki, and can be seen here.

After one year of data collection, and 6000 coded newspaper articles, professors Jostein Gripsrud, Jan Fredrik Hovden and post-doc Hilmar Mjede presented the first findings from the quantitative content analysis of the Scandinavian immigration debate over nearly five decades at the ECREA POL COMM conference in Zürich on 23. November.

Post-doctor Hilmar Mjelde gave two lectures this fall in the course “Societal security and crisis management. Terrorism and counterterrorism” at the Department of  Comparative Politics. On October 20th, Mjelde gave a lecture on the topic of radicalization and de-radicalization, focusing on extreme Islamism.
